Awesome Movie Suggestions: The Shawshank Redemption (1994)

Well dear faithful readers, I have decided that Tuesdays at Island Talk Asia Blog will now feature Awesome Movie Suggestions every week, with an occasional Awesome Book Suggestions every now and again. Kickass Tuesdays means productivity levels are high, and YOUR brain needs to be stimulated! So i think it’s only proper that i start this segment with the movie most will agree to be the best movie ever made. What? You don’t think so? Too bad. This movie (which also happens to be my favorite movie) is listed as #1 in the Top 250 Movies of All Time in the International Movie Database (IMdb).

In a movie originally inspired from Stephen King’s short story “Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption”, it is not what you might expect from Mr King. Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) is a man convicted to two life sentences back to back for allegedly murdering his wife. His cellmates find him the weirdest guy they’ve ever met. There was something they could not understand about him. For a prisoner, he walks like a man without a worry. Sit back and join the ranks of Red (Morgan Freeman) and Heywood (William Sadler) as they miracles of hope as Andy leads them to laugh, cry and gasp throughout their stay in the legendary Shawshank Prison.

It’s Numero Uno for a reason, my friends. If you have yet to watch this masterpiece, wait no longer. People usually sprint off at the mention of a complex idea in a movie. You shouldn’t this time. The complexities of ideas and feelings are simplified for this film in a way that makes perfect sense even to the simplest of minds. While it may be slow in certain areas, the plot will jump back up and bite you on the ass with its twists and surprises. Betrayal, deception, hope, resignation, friendship and cruelty makes Shawshank a miniature version of the cold hard realities of the world. As if that’s not enough, you have the godly Morgan Freeman narrating the entire movie for you. For the girls who think this movie was made for men, its emotional appeal will suck you right in. For the men who wants some action, it’s a prison movie. This IS real violence and cruelty.

For the ladies who can’t seem to get their boyfriends/husbands/best friends to the cinema, this will help to get them appreciate movies. For the men, this will be a good chance to skip those silly movies your girls drag you to and watch something with substance.

Non Spoiler Awesome Quotes

These walls are funny. First you hate ’em, then you get used to ’em. Enough time passes, you get so you depend on them. That’s institutionalized. (Morgan Freeman as Red)
